Aristotle wrote many treatises on biology such as
Aristotle classified organisms into different groups. The largest, Genera, and species within genera. The Genera or Genus and species are both taxa used in our modern taxonomic system.
Aristotle two largest groups of classification were:
The blooded animals (vertebrates in our system) were divided into the genera

Aristotle two largest groups of classification were:
- organisms with blood and
- those without blood (as Aristotle found them).
- These two groups correspond closely with the two of our modern phyla, vertebrates and invertebrates.
The blooded animals (vertebrates in our system) were divided into the genera
- Viviparous Quadrupeds, (means mammals, because they give birth to live young)
- Oviparous Quadrupeds, (reptiles and amphibians, because they lay eggs)
- Birds
- Fish
- Whales (Whales were their own genus because, although Aristotle realized that they were not fish, he did not figure out they were actually mammals)
